The composition of the image, which captures Saturn from an angle looking down on it from above, makes the planet's magnificent rings appear to spread out in an oval shape. The planet itself glows softly with a gradation of colors from pale butter yellow to pale gold and cream. Although not as clear as Jupiter's, delicate stripes can be seen on the surface near the equator, and occasional hexagonal storms can be faintly seen forming at the north pole. The rings surrounding Saturn are, from the inside to the outside, the A ring, the Cassini Division, the B ring, and the C ring, each with a different density and color. The light reflected by the ice particles creates subtle colors ranging from platinum silver to pure white, pale ivory, and light gray. The rings show a dramatic change in color; the inside is highly transparent, allowing the planet itself to be seen through, while the outside is dense and shines with a strong reflection of light. The rings are engraved with countless tiny gaps and ripples that form a concentric pattern. The shadow of the rings is projected onto the planet itself, creating dark bands, and conversely, the shadow of the planet darkens parts of the rings, creating a three-dimensional effect of light. In the background, the moon Titan floats, enveloped in a dense orange atmosphere, and other small icy moons are scattered near the rings. The overall atmosphere is elegant and tranquil, but the complex structure of the rings gives them an overwhelming presence.
